Gabriela Szulman Art

In this  workshop, Gabriela will teach you how to upcycle a chair or another small piece of furniture such as a side table or a simple bedside cabinet using decoupage, a technique that allows you to transform a piece of furniture using just paper and glue. 

Please note that depending on the size and complexity of your piece of furniture you may need two full days, which have to be booked individually. You also have the option of booking just one day and finishing your project at home.

All materials plus drinks and snacks are included in the cost of the workshop. Lunch is not included: you can either bring your own food or eat out at one of several local cafes (nearest one is round the corner from the studio). 
Please note that you will have to varnish your piece of furniture at home.

*The French Art Deco designer Jean-Michel Frank used decoupage on some of his earliest Parsons tables in Paris in the 1920s. Decoupage was revived in the United States in the 1960s, as a popular decoration for boxes, trays, wastebaskets, lampshades, chests, and screens.*

You need to bring your own piece of furniture, clean nad primed with a coat of white paint.

Gabriela's decoupage class was brilliant - it was informative and relaxed and she was very generous with her materials. I would definitely attend another one of her classes.

This was such a great class! I worked on a little coffee table which I covered with a world map pattern and pages from old books. I only did one day and it was non-stop even with a small piece of furniture, so that is something to keep in mind when you book. There were a couple of people in the class who were on their second day of working on chairs and they also left with lovely finished pieces but it took them the whole two days to get there. I appreciated being in a small class with plenty of individual help, and found it interesting to see how different all the results were given that we were all using same materials. Wonderful studio and really helpful teacher. Plus healthy lunch and lots of snacks to keep you going during the day! Recommended.

In this workshop, Gabriela will teach you how to upcycle a chair or another small piece of furniture such as a side table or a simple bedside cabinet.

In this workshop you will learn how to create an original picture using a combination of painting and collage. You do not need any special skills to take part so don't worry if you can't paint or draw! Gabriela will guide you through the technical process and help you design a composition that works. By the end of the day you will leave the studio having completed a picture that you will probably want to hang on the wall when you get home.

You will use acrylics, printed papers and magazines from Gabriela's extensive collection to create your very own masterpiece on strong card stock (supplied). Alternatively, you can bring your own support (a flat surface such as a piece of wood or a stretched canvas) or purchase a 40 cm square canvas at the studio for £10. 

All materials plus snacks, tea and coffee are included in the cost of the workshop. You can either bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local cafes. 

*In 19th century England, during the Victorian era, hand colouring and intricate cutting out gave way to the more sentimental, florid collage-style of this art form. This coincided with the introduction of Valentine cards, decorative and embossed papers and braids to embellish surfaces such as screens, lamp bases, linen boxes and much more. Many a Victorian nanny taught her young charges to beautify objects by applying decorative paper pieces to them.*

I never considered myself naturally creative so I was very unsure about how I would go at this workshop. Right from the start, Gabriela created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and provided really clear and helpful guidance to get me started. Gabriela provided a fabulous range of materials, and had an excellent knack of drawing out my own ideas and inspiration and then advising on how I might best give effect to them, as well as making her own creative suggestions. Gabriela was on hand through out and provided a really high level of individual attention. She stayed completely calm  - even when things didn't go quite as I planned - and was really reassuring and encouraging. I was absolutely delighted with my final piece - it far exceeded my expectations of what I might be capable of - and that is due in no small measure to Gabriela's expert input and tuition. It was one of the most absorbing, interesting and fun workshops I've done, and my piece now hangs proudly on my kitchen wall. I cannot recommend Gabriela's classes highly enough.

*Back in the day, wealthy classes were using master painters to paint their furniture and decorate their walls and ceilings. However, due to excessive demand and the fact that many people could not afford the works of the masters, an alternative form of decoration developed where drawings from the artists of the day were cut out, glued down and covered with lacquer to resemble original paintings. From this derivation came the alternative term "l’arte del povero" (poor man’s art).*

I did a tray decoupage workshop with a group of friends.  Gabriela is a friendly and inspiring teacher and it sparked an ongoing interest in the technique for me.  Her studio is a lovely place to work and has lots of examples of her own work too.   With lots of tea and cake along with the class, what's not to like!

Tray Decoupage Workshop - Obby

We all have shoes we don't wear any more - maybe we are bored with them, the colour isn't right, or we like them so much that we have worn them out. This is your chance to give them a new lease of life! Once you've learned the technique, you will be able to upcycle other pairs at home: all you'll need is time, patience, and a few very affordable materials and tools.
 
During this 4-hour workshop, you will select papers from Gabriela's extensive collection to transform a pair of shoes into your unique creation through decoupage. She will guide you through the design process and show you all the tricks involved in applying very thin paper to a flexible surface. Just find an old pair of shoes or sandals made from leather or plastic (suede or fabric are not suitable), with as little embellishment as possible, and bring it with you. If in doubt, bring a couple of pairs to choose from.
You will be able to wear you decoupaged shoes outdoors as they'll be sealed with a special varnish, although if you’re caught in the pouring rain it’s very likely that they’ll be damaged. You’ll have to treat them in the same way as you would suede or fabric shoes – check the forecast first!

*Decoupage spread throughout Europe and in the 18th century became a fashionable pastime, especially at the Italian, French, and English courts. Graceful, charming, and colourful designs, cut from pictures printed expressly for this purpose, were applied to fans, screens, and toilet articles. In the 19th century, peep shows, miniature vistas viewed through a small opening, were constructed of decoupage.*

A fantastic afternoon decoupaging a pair of shoes - I mean, who knew that was even a thing, right?  You supply the shoes, and Gabriela supplies everything else, including decent coffee, choco Liebnitz biccies, and a wicked soundtrack.  I started with a pair of boring beige pumps, and left with a unique pair covered with vintage maps.  Definitely going to go back to do something else there.

I arrived with a pair of favourite but rather tatty and worn boots, and left with a very funky pair covered in a purple and pink Marimekko pattern. Difficult to believe that paper can be used to upcycle shoes but it works really well, and whenever I wear my boots people ask me where I bought them! 
The class was very relaxed and the studio is beautiful, with a lot of Gabriela´s work on display and inspiring bits and pieces. I appreciated the coffee, biscuits and fruit as it is a long class! 
Gabriela demonstrated every step of the technique and she also gave us one-to-one help, which was much appreciated. I will be coming back to learn other things at this studio soon, highly recommended class.

Learn the technique of decoupage on shoes and be able to upcycle other pairs at home!

A glass dish can be transformed into something really special using reverse decoupage. You will learn to apply layers of paper "upside down" and build them into a one-off design: your own work of art on a plate! 

During this 3 1/2 hour workshop, you will select papers from Gabriela's extensive collection to transform a plain glass dish  (supplied) into your unique creation through decoupage. Gabriela will guide you through the design process and show you all the tricks involved in applying layers of thin paper to a glass surface. You will be able to use the glass dish for food as we apply the paper to the back and then seal it with a waterproof varnish.

Gabby welcomed us with a cup of tea and biscuits and taught us the art of decopage. None of us had previous experience, but Gabbys instructions were comprehensive and as a teacher she was patient and encouraged our creativity! A great Christmas present for my mum sorted!

Really enjoyed the class with Gabriela - she was lovely and a great teacher, and I found the class both fun and relaxing. Decoupage isn't overly difficult but is super effective, so we all came away with really cool plates and tea lights. It's a skill you could definitely take away and do at home.

I really enjoyed my glass decoupage class.  The venue was a perfect setting for a fun crafting afternoon.  Gabriela paced the class perfectly, particularly as I was a beginner.  She was friendly and helpful giving us ideas and lots of materials to work with.  I wouldn't hesitate to re-book.  The whole experience inspired me to experiment at home!

Gabriela was a fantastic host and expert teacher for a friend's hen party afternoon. The studio is beautiful and we had lots of fun being creative and getting to know each other... with plates to take home as mementos of the occasion. Thank you Gabriela!

We went for an afternoon of decoupage on glass plates, for our friend's hen do. Gabriela was fantastic and very helpful. She talked us about the process, gave us step-by-step advice and guided us into making pieces we were actually very happy with, had a fantastic selection of materials and enough variety for everyone to be as creative as we could be, with an infectious enthusiasm for the craft. I was inspired and would love to go back and try another of her classes!

Gabriela's venue/studio is lovely, a nice courtyard in front with birds in the trees, spacious with kitchen facilities too for the all important tea!

The class was a group activity as part of my hen-do (we were very well behaved!), decoupage onto glass plates.  It was fun, simple enough that everyone could take part and come away with something unique and beautiful, and really creative so that we could all flex our artistic muscles.  Gabriela was great at teaching the skills needed so that we felt we could go away and make more on our own afterwards. 

Perfect activity for six, with time for drinks and chatting while we waited for things to dry.  We had a really fab afternoon and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the workshop.

I absolutely LOVED this workshop. It's very relaxing and therapeutic. Gabriela was really kind and generous with her comments and feedback and would advise you on even the smallest of details. The studio itself is very cosy and comfortable (with good music in the background) and it was perfect for a rainy London day. You get to finish the plate and take home a ready to use product. Great class!

It was a great class - I made a wonderful glass plate for my mum's Christmas present and she cried! Gabriella had lots of materials, and even printed off some text for me which was very kind.

Gabriela was a really great teacher and there was so much choice of designs to use. A great introduction to decoupage, would definitely recommend.

This course is the most original course I’ve ever attended! I went with an old pair of shoes and left with this funky amazing and like-new pair!!! I weat them to work and I still get compliments about them. Gaby is so professional and a great teacher! Also you get to meet awesone people and its a time to unwind and recylce at the same time! Highly recommended!!

Highly recommended.  At the top of her field, I’ve admired Gabriela’s colourful, frequently whimsical exquisitely executed work for sometime.  So was thrilled when my sister bought me one of her workshops as a gift.  

The glass decoupage workshop was everything and more than I expected - Gabriela is a great hostess creating a welcoming, relaxed environment to learn and make in.  As a teacher she “got inside” my idea, patiently guiding me through the process.  Stages and techniques were  demonstrated to us as a group but there was also plenty individual attention.  

Was I delighted with what I made?  Absolutely!  Thank you Gabriela for your expertise and generosity.  I cant wait to give the dish I made back to my sister as part of her birthday.
